North Shore Radiation Therapy of Smithtown is equipped with two high-energy, Varian linear accelerators capable of producing x-rays form 6 to 10 MV. They also produce a range of electrons from 4 MeV to 18 MeV. We were the first center in Suffolk County to have two high-energy machines on site. This allows us to offer a broader range of treatment times to our patients, since we have more treatment capability. If one machine is down, having two machines allows us to continue to treat patients without interruption.

Computerized dose calculation is an important part of the radiation plan. Our staff of Board Certified Physicists operate our dosimetry computer system and check for consistency and accuracy through out the course of radiation treatments. Their diligence in performing daily quality assurance checks is vital to the safe and accurate delivery radiation.

Custom-fabricated blocking is manufactured in our mold shop. When vital structures must be shielded from the radiation beam, we create cerobend alloy blocks for the patient, which shape the contour of the radiation beam. These are critical in the process of using "conformal" radiation fields.
