Specialized Treatment Options

Specialized techniques to deliver radiation therapy have given many patients another option to choose from when they are considering the type of treatments they can receive. While every option is not for every patient, it is recommend you ask your radiation oncologist which treatment(s) options are available to you and the Pros and Cons of each one.

Prostate Brachytherapy (a form of Low Dose Radiation or LDR) utilizes radioactive seed that are implantation into the prostate. The radioactive sources used with Prostate Brachytherapy are Palladium 103 (Pd-103), Iodine 125 (I-125) and Cesium 131 (Cs-131).

High Dose Radiation (HDR) Skin Treatments utilizes a radioactive source attached to a wire to deliver radiation to a superficial skin lesion through a special made applicator.

MammoSite® Brachytherapy, like HDR Skin Treatment, utilizes a radioactive source attached to a wire to deliver a dose through a surgically placed specially designed catheter.
